In the last nine years alone, we have awarded quarter million dollars to  marine enhancement programs in the South Florida area. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and thank all the event supporters that assisted in making this happen.  Listed below are some of the donations made so far in 2001.

University of Miami Experimental Hatchery

We are honored to continue our support to the Research Center for Sustainable Fisheries. Our donation will purchase a closed system swim chamber with accompanying radiometry-computer instrumentation. 

 The Billfish Foundation

This scientific organization funds billfish research to ensure a stable future for these amazing creatures. Our donation funds the International Tagging Program, which distributes tags and tagging information to fishing tournaments and clubs worldwide. This tournament's logo is featured on all printed materials. 

 The Nature Conservancy  $5,000                                                     305-289-9060
This gift will help support the Conservancy’s Volunteer Stewardship Exchange (VSE), a service that connects volunteers with conservation activities that match their skills and interests. The VSE has particular success preparing volunteers to assist research scientists studying the marine environment.

 

Coastal Conservation Association Florida

An affiliate of the national CCA, the CCAF seeks to protect and conserve Florida's marine resources. These funds will be used to increase membership in Florida targeting Dade, Broward and the Keys chapters.  

International Game Fish Association     $3,000                                                    954-941-3474    This organization keeps world records and historical artifacts and data on fishing worldwide. IGFA also established and upholds ethical angling standards for world record and everyday catches. Our donation will contribute directly to the IGFA library. 

Florida Keys Marine Laboratory

Located in Layton, the Keys Marine Lab facility hosts 100 marine research and education projects yearly. The facility offers dorm style housing, boats with operators, experiment holding facilities, wet & dry labs and collecting assistance to off-site researchers.  The lab facilitates research in this unique and delicate environment. GMBT donations will purchase aquarium tanks for research purposes.

The Officer Snook Program

This program focuses on educating the youth on water pollution prevention. It incorporates other priority issues, including aquatic and marine ecosystem education and environmental sustainability. 

 B.A.R.T. Biscayne Area Restoration Trust

BART is a newly formed public foundation created in memory of the late Bart Eroncig. The trust seeks to protect, preserve and revitalize the marine ecosystem of Biscayne Bay and its surrounding areas.

Capt. Harry Vernon, Jr. Scholarship Fund

This newly established scholarship fund has been created as a dedication for the late Capt. Harry. The scholarship is awarded to a worthy student studying billfish conservation research. The GMBT award is matched by Capt. Vernon's wife.  This year's scholarship was awarded to Stacey Luthy, studying at the UM Rosenstiel School.

 Youth Fishing Foundation    $1,440                                                305-235-4883      
This organization was established to introduce fishing to underprivileged children in South Florida. In addition to this donation, as part of our annual event, we sponsor Youth Fishing Day for a group of inner city kids to experience the joys of fishing. 

 National Coalition for Marine Conservation    $1,500                                                    703-777-0037
The NCMC is the nation's oldest public advocacy group dedicated exclusively to conserving ocean fish and their environment. Their mission is to build awareness of the crises facing our marine fisheries, and convince policy-makers to reverse the depletion of publicly owned fishery resources. Our donation will be used to print materials for NCMC’s membership drive this year, which will substantially expand outreach among fishing clubs and tournament anglers nationwide.

 

 Florida Sea Grant

This organization is working towards educating the boating and fishing industries to reduce marine debris and increase awareness of its impact on the environment and economy. GMBT funds will pay for the printing of educational brochures and plastic garbage bags.  

 

Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, Inc.            $500
This non profit station is dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing injured seabirds in the Biscayne Bay area, focusing mainly on Brown Pelicans, which are on the threatened species list. Our funding will purchase necessary veterinary supplies.

Mote Marine Laboratory    $1,000                                                           941-388-4441
This research laboratory works to substantially increase knowledge of how to preserve and responsibly enhance fish populations in an environmentally sustainable manner. Our funds are earmarked to purchase incentive prizes to encourage anglers to use circle hooks and participate in research programs.
